Cognitive testing with Creyos

Cognitive testing measures how your brain is working in memory, reasoning, attention and verbal ability. At INPM it is done with Creyos, a series of brief, game-like tasks on a computer or tablet. Your scores are compared with a large database of people your age, which gives an objective picture of cognitive function, much faster than a full neuropsychological evaluation.

What is cognitive testing with Creyos?

Creyos computerized cognitive testing is a series of brief, game-like tasks on a computer or tablet that measure how your brain is working. The tasks are designed to be engaging and clear, not stressful. Your results are compared with a large normative database, which gives an objective picture of your cognitive function, much faster than a full neuropsychological evaluation.

What does it measure?

Memory

Short-term and working memory.

Reasoning

Problem-solving, planning and mental rotation.

Attention

Focus, concentration and response control.

Verbal ability

Word knowledge and verbal reasoning.

Because the scores are measurable and retesting is reliable, the test can be repeated to see whether thinking skills are stable, improving or declining.

Why might your doctor order it?

  • Memory or thinking concerns reported by you or your family
  • Evaluation of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or suspected dementia
  • Tracking cognitive recovery after a concussion or post-concussion syndrome
  • Assessing attention or concentration symptoms (ADHD evaluation)
  • Long COVID with brain fog or memory complaints
  • Monitoring cognitive symptoms in MS, Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy
  • Establishing a cognitive baseline before treatment
  • Tracking the response to treatment over time
  • Telling cognitive complaints related to depression or anxiety from neurologic causes

What should you expect?

  1. Before

    • Get a good night’s sleep before the test.
    • Bring your reading glasses or contact lenses, and your hearing aids, if you use them.
    • Continue all regular medicines unless told otherwise.
    • Avoid alcohol the night before.
    • Eat normally and do not skip meals; light caffeine is fine.
  2. During

You sit at a computer or tablet in a quiet room, and a technologist shows you how to use the system. Each task starts with a tutorial and a practice round, then the actual test. Tasks include memory games, pattern puzzles, attention exercises and word problems: you respond by clicking, tapping or selecting, with no typing or talking. You may take a short break between tasks.

  3. After

Results are generated automatically. Your doctor reviews them with you and explains what they mean. No recovery time is needed.

Is this a pass/fail test?

A common concern, and the answer is reassuring.

  • There is no failing. Everyone has natural strengths and weaker areas.
  • You are compared with people your age. Scores reflect typical performance for your age group, not an absolute standard.
  • No studying is needed. Rest well and come in calm: that is the best preparation.
  • You can pause if you need a break. Stress and fatigue affect results, so tell us if you need to stop.

Is it safe?

Creyos is completely safe

Yes. Cognitive testing involves:

  • No radiation, no injected dye and no IV
  • No needles and no medicines
  • Safe in pregnancy and in children
  • Tasks designed to be engaging, not stressful
  • You can pause or stop at any time
  • Used in thousands of clinics, hospitals and research studies worldwide

01

Is Creyos a pass/fail test?

No, there is no failing. Everyone has natural strengths and weaker areas, and your scores are compared with typical performance for people your age, not with an absolute standard.

02

Do I need to study or prepare for cognitive testing?

No studying is needed. Get a good night’s sleep, bring your glasses or hearing aids if you use them, avoid alcohol the night before and eat normally; light caffeine is fine.

03

Can a cognitive test diagnose dementia by itself?

No. A cognitive test measures how well certain thinking skills are working right now. Your doctor reviews the results with you together with your history, an exam and, when needed, other tests.
